Star of The Week: Johnetta Buchanan

MERIDIAN —     Johnetta Buchanan has been a Meridian resident since 1945 when she and her husband moved here. The 89-year-old Buchanan says that starting that year she also began a job that was significant to this newspaper.

“I started delivering newspapers for the Meridian Star in 1945, and continued for 30 years,” Buchanan said.

A son was born to Buchanan and her husband at the time. She later had six more children.

Married twice, Buchanan married a Methodist minister named George Nelson who later lost his battle with cancer.

None of this keeps Buchanan down and even offers her outlook on the world today.

“When I was a child I grew up on a farm. I was picking cotton by the age of 5, and I've worked hard all my life,” Buchanan said.

Buchanan said that a lot has changed in today's youth.

“Many youth today don't know what work is," she said. "The best thing I can tell a young person today is to strive to make something out of yourself. Ask the Lord what you should do with your life, and more importantly trust the Lord and do what He says.”

Mrs. Buchanan attends church at Lauderdale Methodist, and even at 89 still does all the housekeeping in her home.
