Mock Elections

Obama wins big at Magnolia and Northeast; Romney takes Lamar

MERIDIAN —     Some students in Lauderdale County would have chosen four more years for President Barack Obama if they were old enough to cast real ballots.

Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at Magnolia Middle School in the Meridian Public School District reelected President Barack Obama by a landslide of 97 percent in a mock election Tuesday.

The election was organized by Kristie Martin's eighth grade history class. The students have been studying the branches of government, the election, and the election process. Martin's students also acted as poll workers for the election.

A total of 389 students are enrolled at Magnolia Middle School.

In October, Jeffrey Rhett, with the Meridian Civitan Club, made arrangements to supply sample ballots to ninth grade students at Northeast High School in the Lauderdale County School District, and to ninth grade students at Lamar School.

At Northeast Obama defeated Republican nominee Mitt Romney with 56 percent of the vote. Romney received 37 percent of the vote. The four other  presidential candidates, Gary Johnson, Libertarian, Virgil Goode, the Constitution Party candidate, Jill Stein, Green Party candidate, and Barbara Dale Washer, the Reform Party candidate, split 7 percent of the vote. A total of 133 ballots were cast.

At Lamar, Romney was the winner of the mock election with 86 percent of the vote. Obama received 5 percent of the vote. Johnson received 3 percent of the vote out of 44 ballots.
