Special to The Star
The Meridian Star
Students from 24 local schools have been collecting cans since Oct. 15, and will continue through Friday to help those less fortunate in the community though the work of the Wesley House Community Center.
Last year's effort brought in 40,487 cans of food.
Popeyes and Little Caesars sponsor the event each year and work with schools within the city and surrounding counties.
Participating schools are Calvary Christian, Carver Middle School, Clarkdale Elementary School, Clarkdale High School, Community Christian School, Crestwood Elementary, Enterprise Middle School, Lamar Elementary, Lamar High School, Lamar Middle School, Magnolia Middle School, Northeast Elementary, Northwest Middle School, Oakland Heights Elementary, Parkview Elementary, Poplar Springs Elementary, Quitman Junior High, Quitman Lower Elementary, Southeast Elementary, Southeast High School, St. Patrick School, T.J. Harris Lower Elementary, West Lauderdale Elementary and West Lauderdale Middle School.
To support the effort, Popeyes and Little Caesars will be awarding two grand prizes, $500 for the school that collects the most cans and $500 for the school that has the highest collection of cans on a per student average (which gives the smaller schools an equal opportunity to win a cash prize).
For each participating school, the homeroom collecting the most cans will receive gift certificates for Popeyes/Little Caesars Chicken and Pizza Parties. The winning teacher of that homeroom will receive a Popeyes/Little Caesars Gift Bag. To be eligible for homeroom prize parties, each homeroom must collect a minimum of 250 cans.
The cans will be used for the upcoming holiday season through Wesley House to help feed those who are in need within our community. Visit www.wesleyhousemeridian.org for more information.
