Man arrested in fatal shooting, carjacking

MERIDIAN —     Meridian Police arrested one man Monday night and are looking for another in connection with a Friday night carjacking that left one dead and two others injured.

Meridian Police Detective Dareall Thompson said officers took Cedrick Deshun Norman, 20, into custody for allegedly shooting three men, killing one of them, in an armed carjacking that took place in the 1800 block of 21st Avenue.

Thompson said Norman is being charged with capital murder, armed robbery, carjacking, and aggravated assault.

The Gang Task Force Unit took Norman into custody around 8 p.m. in the 1100 block of 34th Avenue using information gathered by the Violent Crime Unit, a unit that was reactivated Friday by Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose.

"The unit was activated just in time because that is when the murder occurred," said Dubose. "The unit responded, got good information which led to the arrest Monday night. We are still working on that case. The case is a long way from being resolved, but due to their response and intelligence the Violent Crime Unit gathered, we were pretty quick in apprehending the suspect."

Dubose previously had the unit in place during his first tenure was chief of  the Meridian Police Department.

Norman's initial hearing was Tuesday afternoon. He was denied bond for the capital murder charge. Bond on the armed robbery charge was set at $1.5 million, bond on both the carjacking charge and the aggravated assault charge was set at $500,000.

Detectives ask anyone who has information about the crime to call the Meridian Police Department at 601-485-1893, 601-485-1859, 311, or call Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860.
