Shooting suspect taken into custody

MERIDIAN —     A man Meridian Police Department authorities say was one of two people who shot up a garbage truck Thursday is now in custody.

MPD Lt. John Griffith, executive officer for the department, said Tuesday that an operation conducted Monday by members of the MPD's SWAT Team, Narcotics Division agents, and MPD detectives yielded several arrests.

Griffith said the officers raided a house in Meridian and that several misdemeanor drug arrests were made. Among those at the house was the unnamed suspect in the shooting incident that occurred late Thursday morning at 58th Avenue and Arthur Street, about a block from Oakland Heights Elementary School.

In the shooting incident, two men reportedly fired at least 21 times at a man who was a temporary employee on a garbage truck owned and operated by Waste Pro. The man targeted by the two shooters was not hit by any of the bullets but was injured by flying glass as he crouched in the cab of the garbage truck while being fired upon.

Griffith said the name of the suspect is being withheld pending formal charges being filed which may be early today.

In an unrelated incident, Griffith said police Tuesday morning were called to Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian to a report of a shooting victim.

When officers arrived at around 6:15 a.m., police learned the victim was suffering from a serious accidental gunshot wound to the leg. Griffith said the incident occurred on 40th Avenue. Griffith said the victim is in critical condition.

In another case, Griffith said on Saturday MPD detectives charged 22-year-old Demarcus D. Pringle with burglary. Griffith said this charge stems from an incident that occurred in June. Pringle’s bond was set at $15,000.
