City gets homeland security grant

MERIDIAN —     The city of Meridian will receive more than $140,000 in grant money that will be used to offer training at the Meridian's Public Safety Training Facility.

Bunky Partridge, director of Public Safety for the city of Meridian, said the grant is for $143,500 and is from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, Office of Homeland Security.

Partridge said the grant can be used for the purchase of equipment, for planning, training, exercise management or administrative costs.

"We're happy to start receiving the grants and hope to continue on," Partridge said.

Part of the funds will be used to host six Overland Search and Rescue classes, he said.

That class teaches basic skills needed in searching for a person who is missing in a rural environment.

The funds will also help pay for a Collapsed Structure Class, which will be held 10 hours a day for eight days. The Collapsed Structure Class teaches students how to conduct rescues in conditions designed to replicate buildings that have collapsed.

The city will receive administrative costs from the grant, Partridge said.
