MERIDIAN —      Meridian Police Department detectives have arrested a suspect accused of kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old girl.

Police said the incident occurred at about 8:25 Tuesday morning on the east side of Meridian while the girl was walking to school.

MPD Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said Wednesday afternoon a suspect was taken into custody late Tuesday and is expected to be charged with sexual assault.

Harper said because of the sensitivity of the incident, information about the location of the alleged kidnapping and rape and the name of the school the girl attended would not be released.

After the incident the girl was released and she reported the crime to authorities, police said. She was taken to a Meridian hospital for treatment and examination.

Harper said through the cooperative efforts of officers with the MPD's CID and Patrol Division, working in concert with members of the Crisis Intervention Team of The Wesley House, an accurate description of the suspect and the vehicle in which he was driving was obtained. Harper said within hours the suspect was located and taken into custody.

Harper said later Wednesday afternoon the suspect would likely be charged with multiple offenses sometime today.
