Troop 9 rafts the Chattooga River

MERIDIAN —     Troop 9 of Highland Baptist Church recently went on a high adventure rafting trip down the Chattooga River in South Carolina.

The Chattooga River flows from the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains along the South Carolina and Georgia border. All total, 11 scouts and five scout leaders rode their rafts through the whitewater ranging from Class II to Class V rapids, all while dodging the rocks along the wild river.

Life Scout Casey Neal said, “This rafting trip was the best trip we have ever been on.”

The river was tough to navigate but the scouts were up to the challenge, participants said.

"Several, including me, were thrown from their raft into the cold river but that just added to the excitement of the trip," Scoutmaster Steve Corey said.

Those who attended included, Simon Banzhaf, Preston Deese, Tyler Brown, Hunter Junkins, Chason Spivey, Casey Neal, Zachary Corey, Josh Glardon, Nick DeVries, Connor Webb, and Seth Crocker. Leaders who attended were Tom Spivey, Zane Neal, Alan Webb, George Banzhaf and Steve Corey.

Back in 2009 the troop rafted the Gallatin River in Wyoming, which featured the dreaded “mad mile rapids.”

That river is where the movie “A river runs through it” was filmed. While on this rafting trip, the rafting guides told the Scouts that the Chattooga River is where actor Burt Reynolds filmed the movie “Deliverance” in 1972.

"No, we didn't hear any spooky banjos playing off in the distance," Corey said grinning. "But we were listening. Don't know what we would've done had we heard some banjos."

In one stretch along the Chattooga the scouts of Troop 9 rafted the famous Five Falls, which contain five Class IV rapids in a quarter-mile section of the river.

“The adrenaline level was extremely high on every section of rapids,” Star Scout Seth Crocker said.
