Autopsy to be performed on ATV victim

MERIDIAN — Local authorities are waiting on the results of an autopsy that was ordered on a man who died Saturday of injuries after the ATV he was apparently driving hit a tree.

Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said Monday afternoon that the body of 56-year-old Joseph Blanks Jr., was found early Sunday morning on Sanders Road at Causeyville Road.

Calhoun said the preliminary crash report indicates Blanks lost control of the ATV, causing the four-wheeler to leave the roadway and strike a tree.

"Information we have obtained suggests Blanks was at a friends house Saturday afternoon and left later to go home," Calhoun said. "He was found in an area between his friends house and Blanks' home."

Calhoun said when family members became worried about Blanks' whereabouts they set out searching for him and discovered the body and the crash scene.

Calhoun said the reason Blanks lost control of the ATV is still under investigation and that hopefully the autopsy results may shed light on the reason leading to the accident.
