Commercial Bank robbed

MERIDIAN —     A lone black man wielding a shotgun strode into the Commercial Bank location in Briarwood late Wednesday morning and made off with an undetermined amount of cash.

Law enforcement authorities said no one at the bank was injured during the incident.

Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Meridian Police Department, said the alarm of a bank robbery in progress sounded at about 11 a.m. When officers arrived at the bank, located at 7591 Highway 39 North, the suspect had already left.

"The suspect came in and after demanding cash fled in his vehicle," said Harper. "We believe he drove toward Old Country Club Road East."

The suspect is described as being between 18 and 25 years old, standing between 5 feet, 5 inches to 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighing around 140 pounds. Harper said the man wore a dark hood, camouflaged coat and white shoes. Harper said the vehicle is described as an older model black Jeep Cherokee with a broken drivers side rear window and fake chrome air vents on the front fenders. The vehicle did not have a tag. The vehicle also had empty green and white feed sacks inside.

"We are going through the surveillance tapes, both from inside bank and from the outside areas, to try and gain more information on the suspect," said Harper.

If anyone has information pertaining to this incident they are urged to call Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860 or the MPD at 601-485-1863.
