Free workshop for entrepreneurs

MERIDIAN —  Every day, in coffee shops and around kitchen tables, business ideas are shared. But few make it past the idea stage because of the lack of knowledge in developing a successful business plan.

For those with a business idea, now is the time to take advantage of a business building tool, an entrepreneur’s workshop, officials with the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation stated in a press release.

“From Idea to OPEN” is an informal workshop explaining the legal forms of ownership, how to develop a business plan, available small business loan programs, tax issues, financial statements, employee benefits and marketing. It will also include instruction in the use of Business Plan Pro, a simple-to-use computer software program designed to assist any form of business. A special session will focus on securing a business loan.

As a partner in many local economic projects, East Mississippi Electric Power Association is offering the one-day workshop to people in the east Mississippi area on a first-come, first-served basis. The workshop will take place April 18, from noon to 4 p.m., at the EMEPA Auditorium on Highway 39 North.

“In EMEPA’s service area, small businesses are important to our local economy, providing jobs and offering valuable products and services,” said Wayne Henson, general manager of EMEPA and a sponsor of the event. “Many of these businesses started with a basic idea and through careful planning and hard work, they have achieved success.”

The workshop will be led by a group of professional economic developers who have more than 35 years of experience in business development. They, along with the Mississippi Development Authority, have been instrumental in assisting small businesses throughout Mississippi, the press release states.

Registration is free and includes lunch and take-home instructional materials. Registration will be accepted until April 16 or until workshop reaches its capacity of 20 people.
