Meridian police continue to investigate a Thursday night shooting involving local community and civil rights leader Roscoe Jones Sr.
Police responded to a call in the 2200 block of Ninth Avenue around 10:30 p.m. As Jones went to walk into his home, he was attacked by two young black males dressed in hoodies and blue jeans with their faces covered, according to a Meridian Police Department press release.
Jones, who was treated and released from a local hospital, could not be reached for comment. Police did not identify Jones in the press release. A friend of the Jones family, however, confirmed that it was Jones who had been shot.
The assailants were reportedly attempting to rob Jones of his car, but were unsuccessful and shot him once in the back as they ran away on foot.
"We often tell our local residents to be aware of your surroundings and to exercise caution," MPD Capt. Dean Harper said. "Here's someone who was doing just that and he still ended up getting shot."
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (601) 485-1860.
