The Lauderdale Volunteer Fire Department has a new roof on its wish list for Christmas.
The fire department recently raffled off a rifle to help raise money, but Fire Chief Jubal Ryan said the department only cleared about $425 on that project. The Toomsuba Volunteer Fire Department was holding a raffle for the same type of rifle at the same time, he saId.
Ryan said he received a $10,000 estimate on the cost of a new roof and to replace the insulation damaged from leaks. The metal roof on the fire department is original to the 1974 building, "which is great!" he said. But the time has come to replace it. The roof has been overlaid two or three times in the past. Ryan said that won't do the trick anymore.
"The building is owned by the Lauderdale Fire Department," Ryan said. "It's not a county building. However, we are trying to get some help from the board of supervisors."
Ryan appreciates those who designate extra pay on their water and electric bills for their volunteer fire department. The East Mississippi Electric Power Association and the water associations in Toomsuba and North Lauderdale allow residents to contribute through their bills.
Ryan hopes to have another raffle before Christmas, possibly for a flat panel television, to raise some more money for the new roof.
