MERIDIAN —     While some school districts are scurrying to find bread products for their cafeterias, here in Meridian and Lauderdale County it will be business as usual.

Hostess Brand foods announced on Nov. 21 that it will cease operations after it was unable to reach an agreement with the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union. That means the company will no longer be able to supply bread products for school cafeterias.

"The Hostess shutdown isn't going to have any affect on the Meridian Public School District," said Elizabeth MacDonald, spokesperson for the district.

Hostess wasn't among vendors chosen for contracts this year, she said.

The Lauderdale County School District is similarly in good shape.

"It's not going to affect us," said Randy Hodges, superintendent. "We get sandwich bread from Flowers (Baking Company) on Highway 19 South. We get hot dog buns and hamburger buns from Merchant's, which is frozen and shipped to us."
