Hearing set for two independent candidates

MERIDIAN —     Two independent candidates running for city offices were not certified Wednesday by the Meridian Election Commission.

Commissioners George Culpepper, Rick Entrekin, and Catherine Jones met at City Hall to certify independent candidates.

The commission tabled certifying Walter Patton, an independent candidate for mayor because, although he had more than the needed 50 signatures of registered voters, some of those who signed his petition to become a candidate have now asked that their names be removed. That brought the number down to 47 signatures, three short.

The commission set a hearing date for Patton for Monday at 2 p.m. at City Hall. Another candidate who did not qualify will also be able to have his case heard, if he so chooses. Doug Nichols, another independent candidate for mayor, did not get the necessary 50 signatures on his petition. He had only 28. The commission tabled his certification as well.

The Election Commission approved other independent candidates for the general election ballot. Wally Hudnall, a mayoral candidate, had more than enough signatures, as did Thomas Everett Hopson, an independent candidate for Ward Four Council.

There are no primaries for independent candidates. They will be on the general election ballot on June 4.
