MERIDIAN —     The Newton Theatre Company will present the musical, Aladdin, at the Roxy Theatre in downtown Newton today and Friday at 7 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The play is based on the 1992 Disney animated film adapted from one of the Arabian tales in the book, "One Thousand and One Nights."

"The play is very, very family friendly," director Kay Gaddis said. "It is even good for little kids since it only lasts for about an hour to hour and five minutes. The pace is fast action and it is very entertaining for kids of all ages."

The cast consists of 34 children from schools in Newton, Neshoba, Leake and Scott counties.

Scott Central High School senior Jake Wilbourne has been cast to play the character of Aladdin and the role of Jasmine is played by Newton County High School freshman Olivia Vaughn.

The play gives those who have not been out to the Roxy Theatre in a while a chance to see the improvements that have recently been made, Gaddis said.

"The theater has been given a facelift and remodeled," Gaddis said. "It is fabulous."

The Roxy Theatre is located on Church Street in downtown Newton. Tickets for Aladdin are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger.
