Casting for the Meridian Little Theatre’s production of “Steel Magnolias” has been completed. Jimmy Pigford, director of MLT, said that the amount of talent was enormous, giving the casting committee quite a challenging job.
The “steel magnolias” are six strong women of Chinquapin, Louisiana who face life with humor and compassion in this off-Broadway hit. A successful movie was made with many popular actresses.
Donna P. Colburn will play the role of Truvy, the owner of the beauty shop where everybody who is “anybody” has their hair done. Colburn has appeared in many MLT productions, one being the first, “Steel Magnolias.”
Millie Robinson will appear as Clairee, the grand dame of Chanquapin. Robinson is the manager and co-owner of “Reflections.”
The part of Shelby, the “prettiest girl in town,” went to Katie Coleman. Coleman made her debut on the MLT stage at the age of five. Most recently she was in “I love you, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” “A Chorus Line” and “42nd Street.” She is reprising the role of Shelby 23 years after playing the part in MLT’s first production of the play.
Sidney Covington will play the role of M’Lynn, Shelby’s mother. Covington a local radio personality and business woman who has starred in many MLT productions.
The role of Annelle, Truvy’s eager new assistant, went to Tiffany Brooks. Brooks’ husband is stationed at Naval Air Station Meridian. She taught at Florida State.
Playing the part of Ouiser, the town’s rich curmudgeon, will be Bennie Jean Fortenberry. Fortenberry played Miss Daisy in the successful MLT production of “Driving Miss Daisy,” which co-starred John Johnson.
“Steel Magnolias” will be presented Feb. 21-Feb. 27 at the MLT Playhouse. The award winning pay is under the direction of Jimmy Pigford, Scott Merrill producer, Colton Tinsley stage manager, Rita Darrington, set decorator and Ellie Massey is assistant to the director.
