MERIDIAN —     Detectives with the Meridian Police Department are searching for a man who Tuesday night reportedly committed an armed robbery in Meridian.

Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the MPD's Criminal Investigation Division, said at bout 9:30 p.m. a man dressed in a dark hoodie, possibly dark blue, and wearing a black bandanna entered the King City convenience store located at 2935 Highway 39 North. Authorities said the suspect is said to have been a dark complected black male who spoke with a deep voice. Police said the suspect was also wearing gloves. Harper said the man was armed with a handgun.

Harper said the suspect demanded and got an undisclosed amount of cash from the clerk. The suspect then fled the area on foot.

The clerk was unharmed in the incident.

In other MPD cases, Harper said Rey A. Barragan of Port Arthur, Texas was arrested Tuesday and charged with simple assault on a police officer. Harper said the arrest stems from an incident that occurred over the weekend where Barragan is said to have assaulted a police officer as the officer was in performance of his duties. Barragan's bond was set at $25,000.

The officer received minor injuries during the incident.

Harper said police arrested 21-year-old Alonzo L. Oliphant of Newton for felony embezzlement. Oliphant's bond was set at $25,000.
