MERIDIAN —     The United Blood Services Bloodmobile is scheduled to roll up to The Meridian Star offices, 814 22nd Ave., for a blood drive on Friday.

Donations can be made from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., or to make an appointment online visit the website and use the sponsor code meridianstar.

For more than 40 years, January has been recognized as National Blood Donor Month. According to United Blood Services, the area non-profit community blood provider, every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood.

"This year alone, blood transfusions will help save or sustain the lives of more than 5 million patients," a UBS news release stated this week. "Keeping a fresh supply of blood on hand gives them the chance to fight diseases like cancer or leukemia and survive the trauma of accidents."

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height and weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have a Minor Donor Permit signed by a parent or guardian.

For more information about donating blood and eligibility, visit the website or call United Blood Services at (601) 482-2482.
