Volunteers to offer free tax-return help

MERIDIAN —     Get free help with tax returns! Volunteers with the AARP Tax-Aide assistance and preparation service have their  tax forms ready and computers turned on – all in preparation to begin e-filing 2012 returns. All tax preparation volunteers receive formal training each year and are re-certified to be Tax-Aide volunteers.

    Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 5  AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will assist taxpayers with their 2012 tax returns from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a new location —  721 Front St. Extension 760 in Meridian. Reservations are needed at this location. Call 601-482-0512 to reserve a time slot.

    On Thursdays, beginning Feb. 7, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will be at EMEPA, 2128 Highway 39 North from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. First come, first served at this location.

    The service is not limited to residents of Lauderdale County. People from surrounding counties are welcome. The service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Customers should bring their previous year (2011) tax return, along with their paperwork for 2012 and Social Security cards for all members of the family. Blank tax forms are not needed.     AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax program. It was founded in 1968 nationally and has been offered in Meridian for several years. During the last tax season nearly 3 million customers were helped nationwide by AARP Tax-Aide volunteers nationwide.
