Detectives with the Meridian Police Department are investigating a Wednesday morning shooting.
MPD Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said dispatchers received a call about hearing several shots fired in the Redline area of central Meridian. When officers arrived on the scene they found a 45-year-old black man lying in a field. Officers observed the man had been shot several times.
Harper said the victim was transported to a Meridian hospital for emergency surgery. Harper said the man is listed in critical condition.
There was no more information available Wednesday afternoon pertaining to the shooting.
In an unrelated case, Harper said three people have been arrested and charged in connection with residential and commercial burglaries in Meridian.
Harper said 22-year-old Derrick L. Gaddis, Jakuavis D. Powe, 18, and a 17-year-old juvenile were arrested. Each of the three suspects was charged with commercial burglary and two counts of attempted commercial burglary. Gaddis and Powe were placed on $100,000 bond each for their offenses while the juvenile was referred to juvenile court.
Harper said early Tuesday morning police offices responded to and attempted commercial burglary on the east side of Meridian. Harper said detectives investigated the scene and collected evidence before leaving.
A few hours later, Harper said an officer on normal patrol observed suspicious behavior by three individuals on the east side of town. When the officer got out to question the individuals, that turned out to be Gaddis, Powe and the juvenile, the officer discovered another attempted commercial burglary. At this time the officer took the three suspects into custody.
