Wilson charged for 2012 chase

MERIDIAN —     Charges have been brought against a Grenada man who lead Meridian police on a chase in December 2012.

Detrez J. Wilson, 22, was charged with felony eluding on Wednesday. According to Capt. Dean L. Harper, chief of detectives, Criminal Investigations Division, Wilson fled from a Meridian police officer during a routine traffic stop.

"In the state of Mississippi if you flee, that's a felony," Harper said.

Many times people will run during a routine traffic stop because they don't have a license or it's suspended, or they don't have insurance, which, Harper said, is a misdemeanor.

"But as soon as you put someone else's life in danger – which can also include the officer – you're looking at a felony charge," he said.

Bond for Wilson was set at $10,000.

Earlier this week, Meridian police reported a strong armed robbery that occurred in the 1700 block of Second Street, South. Police have now determined that the crime did not occur, and have subsequently charged the suspect, Caleb J. McRee of Lauderdale County, with filing a false police report.

Local law enforcement is investigating several residential burglaries, as well as two auto burglaries that both occurred Wednesday. Details will be released when they become available, Harper said.
