MERIDIAN — Investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department are searching for a suspect in the Friday afternoon armed robbery of a country store.

Maj. Casey McElhenney, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said Monday afternoon they are still seeking the whereabouts of the man they say around 1:45 p.m. walked into B & D Grocery located at 5273 Highway 145 South.

McElhenney said the white man, dressed in all black and wearing a white mask over his face, demanded money from the register as he waved a machete at the clerk. After getting an undetermined amount of cash, McElhenney said the man ran away on foot.

"We believe he may have had someone nearby in a vehicle waiting for him," McElhenney said. "We are hoping someone was in the area at the time this occurred and can give us some more information."

McElhenney said a vehicle description and a direction of travel would be helpful.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860.
