Downtown concert series returns

MERIDIAN —     Outdoor festivities will return to downtown tonight when Meridian Main Street kicks off its spring Downtown After Five Alive concert series at Dumont Plaza.

Since today is Maundy Thursday, and in deference to Holy Week, Main Street officials said the event will be alcohol free, and the performers are Christian musicians.

This first concert in the five week series features opening act Gypsy Carns, also known as “The Blues Preacher.” Carns will be followed by a surprise act with strong Meridian roots. The Cross Mountain Praise Band, a Southern gospel-bluegrass ensemble from Porterville, will bring the evening’s concert to a close.

In addition to the array of musical talent present, event chairperson Leesa Harris said there will be a number of great food vendors at the five concerts.

Tonight's concessionaire is Bobby Roger’s Pony Express.

"They are known for their Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches, hot wings, and famous Phat Burgers,” Harris said. "There will also be activities for kids. Kimbly Sutton and her two daughters will return to paint faces, and a balloon artist/ magician will also be on hand."

The concert series will continue throughout the month of April on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th. Both local and regional artists and musicians will headline the events. These artists include Homemade Jamz, Amy Lott & the Usual Suspects, and Steve Wilkerson. Grady Champion will conclude the series on April 25.

The presenting sponsor for the series is Beyond Capital, and the weekly sponsor for the first evening’s concert is Slay Steel. The concerts are free and open to the public, but food and drinks must be purchased.

Dumont Plaza is located on 22nd Avenue between 4th and Main streets.
