Mayor: Investments in city's future adding up

MERIDIAN —     Investments into Meridian's future took the forefront on Friday when city officials met to discuss ongoing projects.

Mayor Percy Bland met with the Meridian City Council to discuss the status of several projects, including an executive session to deal with an undisclosed economic development project, according to Dr. George Thomas, council president.

Bland said the meeting allowed him the opportunity to update the council on progress in the city.

"We have about $85 million in investments to be made to this city," Bland said.

Among recently announced projects are:

$1.2 million in the 5th Street project, which is a state grant awarded in 2012 to add lighting, sidewalks and street improvements to 5th Street between 23rd and 26th streets,

$11 million at the Kress Building, which will renovate the building for use by MSU as a kinesiology program,

$44 million (fundraising under way) for the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Center,

$22 million total between two hotel development projects and

Value Fair Mall purchase and redevelopment.

"You're looking at a lot of investments being made here locally over the next two years," Bland said.

There is hope for the sale of the historic Threefoot building as well, Bland said.

"We put out requests for proposals. We have three or four strong developers looking at sending us something in writing with their plans and bids for the Threefoot building," Bland said.
