Authorities with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department confirmed Monday afternoon a man they had been searching for was found dead in another state.

LCSD Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said his office had been notified of the death of Darrell Chris Aikens, 35, of Meridian whose body was found in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

"Mr. Aikens has been arrested by our agency before and we had active warrants out for his arrest on some other offenses," Calhoun said. "We were searching for him and the latest information we had on him was entered into the National Crime Information Center database."

Calhoun did not go into detail about Aikens' past arrests in Lauderdale County or what he was wanted for locally.

According to an article on the Tuscaloosa News website, TuscallosaNews.com, information from the public helped investigators identify the body as that of Aikens. The article said Aikens' body was found December 30 near Kauloosa Avenue in Tuscaloosa. The article said Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit assistant commander Lt. Kip Hart said that Aikens came to Tuscaloosa shortly after Christmas from Meridian. Hart said in the article the cause of death has not been determined. Hart said in the article that autopsy results have not been returned.

The article went on to say that anyone who had come in contact with Aikens to please call the homicide unit at 205-464-8690.
