Local man dies in single car wreck

MARION, Miss. — A 56-year-old man died in a single car accident in Marion that occurred at about 8 p.m. on New Years eve.

Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said the man was passing another car at a high rate of speed on the Highway 45 bypass ramp Tuesday when he overcorrected his car, which crossed the median and struck trees on the opposite side of the road.

The man was the sole occupant of the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Cobler said.

As of Wednesday afternoon all of the man's relatives had not yet been notified and his name was not released. Cobler said the man had a Meridian address listed on his drivers license but the car he was driving was registered in Kemper County.

Law enforcement and emergency personnel from the town of Marion and Lauderdale County responded to the wreck.
