On Monday, patriots can show their gratitude and reverence for those who have died in defending America from her enemies by attending a Memorial Day event in downtown Meridian organized by VFW Post 79 in Meridian.
Susan Sylvester is a member of the Lauderdale County Memorial Day Committee. She said the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. outside the Lauderdale County Court House on the west side.
"We will have 200 folding chairs set up for everyone and we encourage all to come and help us say thank you to those men and women who have died in the service of our country," said Sylvester. "The ceremony will be in front of the Wall of Remembrance that holds the names of those who throughout the years have fallen in battle."
The program will include Van "Mac" MaCarty as the Master of Ceremonies. Cassandra Hall will sing the National Anthem. Leroy Morse and Henry Thompson will join in honoring those who have fallen by reading the names of the dead while family members are welcome to place a poppy at the base of the wall.
Wreaths will be laid at the Wall of Remembrance by members of the Ladies Auxiliaries and the NAS Meridian Honor Guard will sound off a 21-gun salute. Ron Smith will play Taps as the ceremony concludes.
