MERIDIAN —     An armed robbery and aggravated assault suspect was arrested Thursday afternoon in a joint operation between Meridian Police Department and Marion Police Department authorities.

Meridian Police Department Capt. Dean Harper, commander of the department's Criminal Investigation Division, said the name of the suspect is being withheld until formal charges can be filed later this morning.

At about 1:50 p.m., detectives with the Meridian and Marion police departments, along with members of the Meridian Police Department's Direct Action Response Team (DART) unit, served a warrant at a duplex at 6262 Chickasawhay St. in Marion after Marion Police Department authorities collected information on the man's location.

He was taken into custody without incident. Harper said the man is expected to be charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault. The charges are from an incident that occurred Wednesday morning at The Chimney Store located at 5300 Fifth Street.

MPD authorities said a store clerk was severely beaten during the robbery. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His wounds were not life threatening, officials said.

Around noon, detectives and DART unit members went to an unspecified location in Meridian trying to locate the suspect in the robbery but he was not at the residence. Minutes later, Meridian detectives received a call from Marion Police Department authorities who said they had a location on suspect. A short time later the two departments met in Marion and mapped out a plan.

In less than 20 minutes, officers with the two department converged on the duplex in a quiet neighborhood of Marion, quickly surrounded the residence and took the suspect into custody without incident.

For the next half hour, officers scoured the apartment for physical evidence.
