Authorities continue to gather evidence

MERIDIAN —     Even though investigators had to release Tuesday afternoon a man whom they said was a person of interest in the Monday fatal shooting of a Meridian man, they are still confident they will find the person or persons responsible for his death.

Sheriff Billy Sollie said Wednesday morning investigators were interviewing several people who may have information about the fatal shooting that claimed the life of Antonio Dewayne Amerson.

"Interviews are ongoing as is the overall case and it is our hope we can get some credible information so we can make an arrest," Sollie said.

Shortly before 10 a.m. Monday, Sollie said a motorist traveling down Burrage Road in the southwest part of Lauderdale County came across the body of a black man lying in the middle of the road. Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler later identified the man as the 34-year-old Amerson of Meridian. Sollie said Amerson was killed by at least one gunshot wound to the back.

Cobler said the body has been sent to the medical examiners office in Jackson for an autopsy. Wednesday morning Cobler said he has not received a preliminary report from the medical examiner.

Sollie said the area in which Amerson's body was found was on the part of Burrage Road that is gravel. He said the first part of Burrage Road is pavement.

Sollie said a telephone tip later Monday led investigators to a church on Burrage Road where a truck, thought to have been driven by at least two men who were seen in the area of the body Monday morning, was found.

"We processed the truck and we still have it impounded," Sollie said.

Sollie said there possibly could be another person of interest in the homicide. He said investigators are trying to locate that person.

"We have the vehicle and the timeline now we just need to work out the details and get those involved into custody and charged," Sollie said.

This is the first murder in Lauderdale County this year.

If anyone has information about the shooting, they are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 601-485-1860.
