A female guard at East Mississippi Correctional Facility has been charged with having sex with an inmate.
EMCF officials and investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department confirmed Monday that the guard, Casandra L. Davenport, 38, of 2585 Old Wire Road in Meridian, was arrested and charged with having sex with an inmate. Davenport, who on June 7 was taken into custody at the prison and charged by investigators with the LCSD, was placed on $5,000 bond. Davenport, according to LCSD jail records, posted bond and is now currently out of jail.
EMCF Warden Frank Shaw said Monday afternoon Davenport was initially being investigation by prison authorities for bringing contraband into the prison to an inmate. Shaw said during the investigation and subsequent questioning which occurred around May 19, Davenport admitted to bringing in tobacco and food from outside the prison, which is a violation of the prison's guidelines.
"But the more we delved into the incident the more we became convinced there was more to it," Shaw said. "The case sort of ballooned from there to include the other charge."
When prison officials had determined they had enough evidence in the case, investigators with the LCSD were called in.
"The prison authorities did the leg work in the investigation and turned the evidence over to us," LCSD Maj. Casey McElhenney said. "We filed the charges on behalf of the prison and then took her into custody."
Shaw said the charge stemmed from an alleged interaction of a sexual nature between Davenport and an inmate. He said the investigation is ongoing.
"We have a zero tolerance for breaking the rules at any of our facilities we manage," Shaw said.
Davenport was immediately terminated upon her arrest.
