• Young musicians from across the state are invited to apply to participate in the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute. Through the generosity of the Orchestra’s National Trustees, one student from most states may be may be selected to join outstanding young musicians from across the nation for the 2009 program which will be held June 29-July 27, 2009 in Washington, DC.

  Young musicians ages 15-20 (as of June 29, 2009) are eligible to apply. SMI applications must be received by the Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE) no later than Jan. 20, 2009. Students will be notified of results by March 6, 2009.

  This Summer Music Institute, which is a four-week festival of orchestral and chamber music, is designed for serious music students. The fellowship provides the following benefits to students accepted into the program: round-trip air transportation to and from Washington, DC, as well as housing, meals, and local transportation during their stay.

  In addition, students receive:

• private lessons taught by a member of the National Symphony Orchestra

• chamber music coaching by NSO musicians

• master classes and seminars

• attendance at selected rehearsals and performances of the NSO

• participation in the NSO Summer Music Institute Orchestra, conducted by Elizabeth Schulze

• performance opportunities in the DC metropolitan area, and

• exposure to internationally-renowned conductors, soloists, and musicians

  The Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education serves as state sponsor for the competition and is responsible for accepting applications and selecting up to five entries to be sent to the NSO for consideration.
