Students help to feed hungry this holiday season

From staff reports

Twenty-three local schools collected 22,726 cans during the Kid's Cans Canned Food Drive through the Wesley House Community Center, held Oct. 20-Nov. 7.

The food goes to help people in the community who are in need this holiday season.

Popeyes and Little Caesar’s sponsor the event each year. This is the fourth annual Kid's Cans drive, which works with schools to collect the food.

Participating schools this year were: Calvary Christian; Carver Middle; Clarkdale K-12; Crestwood Elementary; Kate Griffin Jr. High; Lamar Elementary; Lamar Middle School; Magnolia Middle; Northeast Elementary; Northeast High; Oakland Heights Elementary; Parkview Elementary; Poplar Springs Elementary; Russell Christian; Southeast Elementary; Southeast High; Southeast Middle; St. Patrick School; T.J. Harris Upper and Lower; West Hills Elementary; West Lauderdale Middle; and Witherspoon.

Lamar Elementary School collected 2,822 cans to win the $500 prize for the school with the most cans collected. Calvary Christian received $500 for the most cans on a per-student average with each student averaging 16.75 cans each.

Mrs. Singley’s fourth grade homeroom at Lamar Elementary collected 512 cans to capture the overall winning homeroom prize.

Cans were picked up in two days with the help of trucks and drivers donated by Long’s Wholesale, Graham Moving & Storage and Wrangler Furniture.
