Tamiflu, Relenza available for Miss. uninsured

If you are an uninsured or underinsured Mississippian, you may be able to get antiviral medications that combat swine flu for free, the Mississippi Department of Health announced Monday.

MSDH has entered into agreements with selected pharmacies throughout the state to help distribute Tamiflu and Relenza from the state and federal stockpiles to patients who cannot otherwise afford them.

The medications are only available through a prescription from a medical doctor. In order to receive the medications for free, patients must bring both a prescription and a signed document from their healthcare provider indicating in which high risk group the patient belongs.

Swine flu vaccine is now available in all county health department clinics. The first injectable vaccine doses are available to: pregnant women; children 6 months through 4 years of age; and parents, siblings, caregivers, and anyone else living in the house with an infant under 6 months of age. These groups are at highest risk for complications from influenza.
