Clean Halloween

Family-friendly Halloween activities planned

from staff reports

Adults and teens often celebrate Halloween by partying, mischief-making, or watching scary movies — but it's kids that get the candy.

The city of Meridian will officially celebrate Halloween this year by allowing trick-or-treating on Saturday, Oct. 31. City ordinance stipulates that only youngsters aged 12 and under trick-or-treat and sets the curfew for trick-or-treating at 10 p.m.

If you're celebrating Halloween with your kids in Meridian and the surrounding area, here are a few activities that can add some spice to your festivities while keeping things G-rated:

Mall-O-Ween

Starting at 6 p.m. on Halloween, Bonita Lakes Mall will hold a mall-wide trick-or-treat event while supplies last. Children aged 12 and under are invited to enjoy a safe trick-or-treating environment with mall retailers. Adults are asked not to arrive in costume.

Poplar Springs Elementary Fall Festival

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Halloween, Poplar Springs Elementary has invited the community to participate in their fall festival activities at the school campus. Activities include a cake walk, raffle and prizes, blow ups, and more. Tickets are sold at the entrance.

Lazy Acres Plantation Pumpkin Patch

Lazy Acres Plantation, located at 596 Lazy Acres Road in Chunky, offers a pumpkin patch with lots of autumn activities, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m on Halloween. A $5 admission includes a 3-acre corn maze, hay rides, petting zoo and pig races. Kids three and under get in free. Additional charge activities include rides on the Chunky Choo Choo for $2, and two shots from the "Punkin' Chunkin'" slingshot for $1. Concessions are also available. For more information, call (601)655-8264 or visit www.lazy-acres.com.

Keep Meridian/Lauderdale County Beautiful Coordinator Sharon Smith shows one of the Halloween treat bags KAB has delivered to city and county schools and daycare facilities this week. The commission purchased more than 5,000 bags for distribution to students in K-second grades as a fun way to promote their anti-litter message. "Let's Keep it Clean on Halloween," is the theme and Smith reminds area trick-or-treaters to not litter on Halloween by placing candy wrappers in the Earth-friendly plastic bags. Bags are available through the KAB office, which is located in the Arts District Parking Garage in downtown Meridian. For more information, call (601) 485-1996.
