Meeting Minutes

Meeting: Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors. The next regular scheduled meeting of the board of supervisors is Monday, October 20 at 5 p.m. at the Raymond P. Davis County Annex Building.

What Happened:

• October was declared National Arts and Humanities month. This month in Meridian, check out the Threefoot Arts Festival, in which artists from across the South display and sell their work in downtown Meridian. The festival is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• October was also declared National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Victims of domestic violence have options. For information on how to escape domestic violence call the 24 hour crisis line for Care Lodge Domestic Violence Shelter at (601)693-4673. For information on helping victims of domestic violence, call Care Lodge's administrative office at (601)482-8719.

• Supervisor Craig Hitt motioned to amend the proposed garbage fee for county residents. Instead of raising everyone's fee to $100 a year, Hitt proposed increasing all current fees by $60, so that people who are currently exempt would pay a $60 fee, and people who currently pay $60 would pay $120. The motion failed in a 3-2 vote. The board will hold a public hearing on the fee increase, which is planned for Oct. 30 at 11 a.m.

• The county authorized the sale of 16 acres of land to St. Patrick's Catholic School for $277,850. St. Patrick's plans to build a new school on the land.

• County Administrator Mike Sumrall, an avid motorcyclist, reminded the public that there will be a H.O.G. rally in Meridian this weekend, and asked the motorists be aware of all the bikers on the road this weekend.
