By Jennifer Jacob

A fire Saturday night claimed the life of at least one man. The fire, which happened around 8 p.m., burned a trailer on Fifth Street between 38th and 39th avenues. Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler confirmed that the body of a white man was found at the scene.

Cobler had not yet determined the official cause of death, but said the body was found near the back door of the trailer and it appeared as if the man was trying to escape the fire. He said the man could have died of smoke inhalation.

No further information could be provided about the victim because next of kin had not yet been notified at press time. MFD Chief Jeff Homan said the cause of the fire had not been determined as of last night but that the fire marshal and investigators were on the scene.
