A Newton man who was recently charged with the murder of 27-year old Shasta Smith, was placed on $600,000 bond in Newton County Circuit Court.
Thurman Arrington, 41, faces murder charges after he allegedly shot to death Smith Sunday during a birthday party for Smith's sister. Smith was reportedly shot once in the neck and died Monday at a hospital in Jackson.
Authorities said the shooting incident occurred at a home in Newton where the birthday party was being held. Arrington, the boyfriend of one of Smith's sisters, reportedly left the party and returned very upset. Witnesses said Arrington began berating people in attendance. During this tirade Arrington is said to have shot Smith.
Newton Police Department Chief Harvey Curry said Wednesday the investigation continues. The gun used in the incident has not been recovered.
