Brennaman named assistant sports editor

from staff reports

Chris Brennaman has been named assistant sports editor of The Meridian Star.

Brennaman joins the Star after nearly a decade of working at WTOK-TV in one capacity or another.

"Chris is a known commodity in East Mississippi," said executive editor Fredie Carmichael. "He is a well-respected journalist who is a trusted source of news in this community. He has already provided excellent coverage for our readers and I'm confident they'll continue to learn more about our community through his role as assistant sports editor."

Brennaman replaces Brandon Walker, who has served as assistant sports editor for the past year at the Star. Walker will be joining the sports staff at the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo.

Brennaman started work at WTOK-TV in 1999 as a production assistant, ultimately working his way into an on-air position as a reporter. In August, Brennaman chose to leave television to follow his dream of covering sports.

Brennaman has covered a number of big stories in the area and has conducted interviews with the likes of Barack Obama, John McCain, B.B. King and John Grisham. He has also interviewed numerous current and former professional athletes such as Jerry Rice, Willie Roaf and Deuce McAllister.

Brennaman won a statewide Associated Press award for Best Feature Photography for a story done on the 186th Air Refueling Wing.

A native of Kansas City, MO., Brennaman moved to the Meridian area in elementary school. He graduated from Enterprise High School before attending Meridian Community College. Brennaman holds an A.A.S. degree from MCC and a B.A. degree in Broadcast Journalism from The University of Southern Mississippi.
