Police looking for burglary suspect

By Brian Livingston / staff writer

Meridian Police Department authorities are currently searching for a suspect in at least two burglary incidents, the latest of which allegedly occurred Sept. 1 in Meridian.

Lt. James Sharpe of the MPD said they are trying to locate and arrest John Wayne Sims, 31, who is thought to still be in the Meridian area. Sharpe said Sims has two warrants for felony burglary.

"We have reason to believe Sims is armed and we consider him to be a dangerous suspect," said Sharpe. "Apparently he has been preying on relatives and they are very concerned for their safety, for the safety of the general public and for Sims' own well being. They believe him to be in a very violent state of mind right now."

In one of the alleged burglary incidents Sims is believed to have stolen a handgun of unknown caliber and make. Detectives who have been working on the case were also informed by sources Sims is usually armed.

According to law enforcement records, Sims was carrying a firearm when he was arrested Oct. 2, 2006 in the Highland Avenue area of Meridian. He was charged with convicted felon in possession of a firearm and probation violation. Sims has served a prison term on drug charges as well according to sources.

Sims is described as standing 6 feet tall and weighing 145 pounds. He may be driving a 1995 Toyota Camry, black in color, with MS tag number of 819-LCK.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crimestoppers at 601-616-4317 or MPD Investigations at 601-485-1856 or 911.
