Christmas with cop applications available soon

To be benevolent means to be kindhearted, compassionate and charitable.

For many years and throughout many Christmas seasons the Meridian Police Department's Benevolent Association has filled that role in providing clothes and toys to youngsters less fortunate than many.

The Meridian Police Department Benevolent Association will start taking

applications for Christmas with a Cop on October 1, 2008 starting at 8 a.m.

Applications may be picked up between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., beginning on Oct 1, Monday through Friday, at the Detective Division window of the Meridian Police Department. Applications can be picked up through the entire month of October.

"Last year we were fortunate enough to provide help and a happy holiday season to more than 300 children," said MPD Administrative Capt. Rick McCary. "We look forward to serving more for the 2008 Christmas season."

The MPD Benevolent Association receives its funding solely through fundraisers and donations from the general public and business sector. McCary said the role of the public cannot be underestimated nor ignored.

"If it weren't for the donations we wouldn't be able to do this," said McCary. "So we urge everyone to give a little bit which will in turn help a lot of children."
