Gustav Notes
• Gov. Haley Barbour has issued a state of emergency and encourages residents to prepare now for potential impact of the storm.
• United Blood Services is calling for area residents to help shore up its blood supply in preparation of Gustav. The blood center at 1115 25th Ave. will be open today, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
• Clarkdale Future Farmers of America, in conjunction with the East Mississippi Electric Power Association, is offering a free workshop Saturday, 9 a.m.-11 a.m., on generator safety in the new shop area on the Clarkdale school campus. You can bring your own generators for hands-on assistance if you wish.
• LOVE's Kitchen is working with the American Red Cross, Lauderdale County and the City of Meridian to help provide meals if needed.
• The Salvation Army is preparing 100 feeding units and three fully-equipped field kitchens for immediate response in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The Salvation Army also is preparing clean-up kits, hygiene kits, drinking water, shower units, and first aid supplies.
