Kinard and Mays receive bond amounts

By Brian Livingston / staff writer

Billy Kinard and Tikeshalia Mays, who were arrested Monday afternoon after leading six law enforcement agencies on a multi-county chase, were placed late Monday on $140,000 and $130,000 bonds respectively.

Kinard, 31, of Meridian, and Mays, 18, of Pritchard, Ala., were taken into custody in a wooded area two miles north of Clarkco State Park on Hwy. 145 after Kinard ran the car he was driving into the edge of some woods. He and Mays were caught after a half hour sweep by approximately 40 law enforcement personnel.

Kinard is accused of tying up his 80-year old uncle in Lauderdale County, robbing him, and leaving him bound for two days inside his home. The still unnamed victim was able, however, to finally free a hand he used to call a neighbor who in turn notified authorities.

Kinard and Mays were charged with aggravated domestic assault, felony fleeing and eluding of law enforcement, vehicle theft, robbery and kidnapping.

At times during the car chase Monday afternoon, speeds reached more than 100 miles per hour as Kinard and Mays fled south on Hwy. 145. Law enforcement units from the Meridian Police Department, the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department, and troopers of Troop H of the Mississippi Highway Patrol were in pursuit from the north while officers and deputies from the Quitman Police Department, Stonewall Police Department, Enterprise Police Department and the Clarke County Sheriff's Department moved from the south.

All along the route officers and deputies staked out alternative roads in case Kinard decided to turn onto secondary county roads. But it was near Clarkco State Park where the net tightened causing him to attempt fleeing on foot.

Heavily armed officers and deputies, some accompanied by K-9 officers, immediately instigated a search pattern of the wooded area. Mays was found first and a few minutes later Kinard was taken into custody.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
