Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors, Monday, July 7



What Happened:



• Purchases of video surveillance and automatic door locking equipment for the Lauderdale County Juvenile Detention Center were approved. The county has not been in compliance with state and federal guidelines on the upkeep of the facility, and the board is now taking steps to meet some of the guidelines.

• County Engineer Neal Carson reported that the county is now buying asphalt at $78 a ton, a dramatic increase from the county's $30 a ton asphalt purchases three years ago.

• Jim Smith, the Chief Justice of the State of Mississippi, appeared before the board on a campaign stop. He said that he is running on his 25 years experience as a supreme court justice, and added: "I'm progressive and aggressive and have the support of the court."

• Board President Ray Boswell, District 5 supervisor, complained to Sheriff Billy Sollie that a thief who had made away with a trailer belonging to Boswell was not arrested. Sollie responded that the Sheriff's department had recovered the trailer and identified who had it, but that Boswell had failed to file charges.
