The Meeting: Meridian City Council. July 7, 2009.
Top Story:
Ward 5 City Councilman Bobby Smith sat in on his first meeting in four years — returning to a seat he once held. "I'm proud to be back and I’m looking forward to working with the new mayor - we've talked quite a bit - and with the council members who I've know for a long time," he said. "We've got a lot to do... There's so much in this city that needs to be done. I'm looking forward to walking the streets with our new mayor to get these things done."
What Happened:
• Bobby Smith (Ward 5) was elected president of the City Council. Jesse E. Palmer, Sr. (Ward 4) was elected vice president.
• A representative of the U.S. Census board asked the council to assist with the 2010 Census by helping to create a "complete count" committee whose purpose would be to educate the public that the census is important. It determines federal funding and congressional representation. It's safe because questionaires are confidential and cannot be released to other government agencies, and easy because it contains only 10 questions.
• The city will advertise for repairs to Bonita Lakes. Public Works Director Monty Jackson said there is leakage in one of the dams and there is erosion in one of the ditches.
