A Meridian man was killed early Friday morning in a one-vehicle accident on Hwy. 45 North, according to officials.
Deandra Jevon Brown, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash which occurred at about 3:15 a.m. near Russell Topton Road. His body is being sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said the preliminary crash investigation at the scene seemed to indicate Brown was traveling north when the Chevrolet Impala he was driving left the roadway at a high rate of speed. There was no indication as to why Brown's vehicle ran off the road.
"The car traveled about 50 feet from the highway and snapped a pine tree in two (pieces) that was at least a foot in diameter," Cobler said. "It then continued on for several more feet before it impacted several other pine trees."
The impact caused a fire that ultimately engulfed the vehicle.
