Teen charged in child abuse case

By Brian Livingston / staff writer

A Meridian teen has been charged for felony child abuse which involves his four-month-old daughter.

Meridian Police Department authorities said Paul Harris, 19, has been charged in the incident after the mother of the child alerted police. According to reports the mother noticed her child was drifting in and out of conscientiousness after she picked her up from an overnight stay with Harris.

The baby ultimately was transported to a Jackson hospital where it was discovered the infant was suffering from bruises to the face, back and legs, fractured ribs and bleeding from the brain.

Despite the injuries the baby is expected to make a full recovery.

Bond for Harris has been set at $15,000. The case is expected to go before a grand jury in November. A felony child abuse conviction can result in up to 20 years in prison.
