Two men charged with Scooba bank robbery

By Brian Livingston / staff writer

Charges have been filed against two men who on Monday morning allegedly robbed a bank in Scooba.

According to officials, Frederick Campbell, 21, of Scooba and Mark Butler, Jr., 22, of Summit, have been charged with armed robbery in connection with the incident. They were apprehended in York, Ala.

One of the two men reportedly walked into The Citizen's Bank of Scooba at about 9:40 a.m. Monday and produced a handgun. He demanded money from one of the tellers and once given the undetermined amount of cash, fled on foot through a wooded area where his accomplice was waiting in a parked car. The car sped off on Hwy. 16 toward Alabama, officials said.

Law enforcement authorities in Sumter County, Ala., alerted of the incident, spotted the two suspects and after a short pursuit were able to get them into custody.

Two vehicles, most of the money and a gun were confiscated during the arrests. Sumter County authorities say it's unknown at this time if the two will face charges in that county for attempting to flee authorities during their arrests.

Campbell and Butler are still being held in a Sumter County jail awaiting the results of a hearing determining when they will return to Kemper County to face the armed robbery charges.
