A teenager is in a Meridian hospital today fighting for his life after being struck by a vehicle Sunday night in Marion.
Officials with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said the teen, whose name is being withheld because of his age, sustained extensive head trauma as a result of the impact. He is listed in critical condition.
LCSD Chief Dep. Ward Calhoun said the incident occurred on Marion Lizelia Road in Marion at about 10:20 p.m. The vehicle, whose driver is unidentified as yet, was traveling northbound near Tuscaloosa Street when the incident occurred. The pedestrian was also traveling north. There was no information available as to how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time of the incident. Calhoun said the driver of the vehicle has not had their identity revealed pending the outcome of the accident investigation. No charges have been filed but the driver was ticketed at the scene for operating a vehicle on an expired driver's license.
"Marion Police Department officials called us in to help out with the accident investigation," Calhoun said.
