$50,000 bond for assault suspect

By Brian Livingston / staff writer

A man arrested late Friday night after he allegedly assaulted a woman with a gun was placed on $50,000 bond Monday in Lauderdale County Justice Court.

Wallace F. Reed, 38, of Scooba, was taken into custody after a car and foot pursuit that started in Lauderdale and ended about two miles south of Scooba on Hwy. 45 North. Reed, according to eye witnesses, used a handgun to beat an unidentified woman outside the CEFCO Convenience Store in Lauderdale. The incident happened at about 11:30 p.m.

"We received the call of the alleged assault while it was in progress and fortunately we had a deputy, Rustin Russell, very close by," said Ward Calhoun, chief deputy for the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department. "He was on the scene within thirty seconds and began his pursuit of Reed after witnesses pointed out the vehicle the suspect was in."

Reed led the deputy into Kemper County and just before entering Scooba exited the vehicle when it was still heading north on the highway at 30 miles per hour. Russell stopped and exited his vehicle to give chase. After a short foot pursuit Russell caught up with Reed in a wooded area. Calhoun said Reed refused to surrender and was tased by Russell. Reed then was placed into custody.

A handgun, fully loaded and cocked, was reportedly seized from Reed.

Reed is charged with aggravated assault/domestic violence, simple assault, felony fleeing, resisting arrest and multiple misdemeanor offenses.

The investigation is ongoing in this case.

The female victim was treated for cuts and bruises.
